Road Safety Adverts Through The YearsThis February sees the 75th annual Road Safety Congress and we've collated the best UK road safety adverts over the years, from Tufty to Tales of the Road to the graphic, post-watershed adverts of recent years. Crossing The RoadRoSPA's and the Department of Transport's road safety campaigns have made a dramatic difference in the number of children killed or seriously injured on the roads. Since 2007 deaths of children by road accidents has dropped 55% from 37 deaths a week. In 1990 around 9000 children were killed or seriously injured on the roads, approximately 170 per week! 2009 - Tales of the Road: The Girl Who Didn't Dress Bright 1997 - Hedgehogs - Stop Look Listen Live The Hedgehogs campaign ran from 1997 to 2008 in a series of 10 adverts highlighting various road safety dangers.
1983 - Close To The Edge
1976 - Green Cross Code (featuring Dave Prowse) Dave Prowse's voice was dubbed in the first 2 adverts in the series but in this one it's all Dave and his Bristol accent. Kevin Keegan, Jon Pertwee and Alvin Stardust also appeared in Green Cross Code adverts around the same time.
1973 - Tufty the Squirrel Tufty was created by RoSPA in 1953 and started teaching road safety and continues to this day. The Tufty Club was set up in 1961 as a nationwide network of local groups to promote road safety to the under fives.
1948 - Pedestrian Crossing This public information film from 1948 shows the correct use of pedestrian crossings.
SeatbeltsAround 370 people a year die in Britain because they were not wearing a seatbelt. The first UK seat belt law came into force on January 31st 1983 and since then it is estimated that over 50,000 lives have been saved through correct seatbelt usage. The "Clunk Click Every Trip" campaign was started by RoSPA in 1971. The "clunck" was closing the car door, the "click" was clicking your seltbelt on. The last film to use the slogan was "Elephant" in 1993 which ran until 1998 when it was replaced by "Julie". 2008 - Think! Always Wear A Seatbelt. This version of the advert had to be shown after the 9pm watershed due to it's graphic imagery.
1998 - Julie Julie ran from 1998 to 2003 and was even shown in France.
1994 - Elephant
1972 - Clunk Click Every Trip (featuring Sir Jimmy Saville) There were 6 films in the"Clunk Click" series, Maximillian, Shopping, Accidents at Speed, Lucky Escape, Myrtle and Loose Objects. Think BikeThis campaign aimed to raise awareness among car drivers to watch out for motorbikes at junctions. Considering it's still going nearly 30 years late it makes you wonder how effective the campaign has been. Bike accidents account for 20% of all road deaths. 2006 - Think Bike
1978 - Jimmy Hill Related Links:
